Dr. Workman's African Art Collection

On Saturday July 9th a small group from the "Friends of South Africa" group visited with Dr. Workman. He showed us his vast collection of African art. He had some exquisite Shona pieces as well as artwork from central Africa. The vast majority of the sculptures were, however, from West Africa. This is understandable as the sculptural tradition from West Africa goes back a 1000 years. Most of the pieces were carved out of wood and many had been used in rituals and dances.

Dr. Workman started his collection when he was about seven years old and has primarily bought from traders. He has also visited Africa and showed us a portfolio of photos that he accompanied with fascinating stories that brought many of the sculptures and artworks to life.
